The new government legislation requires all businesses to separate food waste from other waste for separate collection by 31 March 2025. Under the new law, food cannot be sent to landfill or incineration; it must be sent for recycling. If you are a small organisation (under 10 full-time employees), you will have until March 2027 to comply.
Some local authorities in Devon are still collecting food waste as part of general waste so if you fall within those areas and use local authority services, please be aware of this legislation.
According to Care England, research has shown businesses that monitor food waste through having separate collection services often save money from a reduction in food waste. By focusing on it, they save money through improving ordering practices, portion control, and better stock rotation.
Taking proactive steps to do the right thing for the environment by recycling food waste is one strand of a sustainability strategy for your home.
