Smart Technology in Care Homes: December 2023

An important event in December was the first meeting of the advisory group. We delved into important project updates, discussing how smart speakers, particularly Alexa, would play diverse roles based on individual needs and capacity levels. The group shared valuable insights into privacy concerns associated with smart speakers and suggested transparent communication as a solution. Consequently, we've agreed to create posters for care homes, displaying clear warnings about the presence of smart speakers in easy-to-read and accessible language.

Furthermore, we've collaborated with the Torbay Hospital E-learning team to develop e-learning modules explaining why and how smart speakers can enhance care home residents' well-being.

Finally, our discussions extended to Torbay Carers, who emphasised that our resources would also be beneficial for the carers they work with. They highlighted the potential to promote independence among the individuals they are caring for. Recognising the broader impact of our project, we're enthusiastic about collaborating with Torbay Carers to ensure that our resources cater not only to care home residents but also extend support to the caregivers who play a crucial role in promoting the well-being and independence of those under their care.
