Settling Into a Care Home

Its not always easy making the move so below are some useful tips that could help you or the person requiring care settle into their new home.

Take some familiar comforts

  • Music
  • Your favourite armchair

Taking some of your favourite things can make your home feel more familiar. Check with your new home prior to moving in what space you will have in your room, then you can plan for what to take with you.

Talk to staff

Tell staff what you like to do and when, what your favourite food/drink is. You may like to have a lie in on a weekend, you may prefer lunch in your room, or you may like to have a snack at a certain time. The staff are there to help you so make sure you talk to them.

Finding your way around

It can take a while to get your bearings in your new home, so ask for help to find where things are until you feel confident to make your own way around.

Staying Connected

Keeping in contact with your family or friends is very important, you can always use the home phone to make any calls or your friends/family can call the home to have a chat with you.

Give it time

Moving into a care home can be life-changing so do not be surprised when it may take a few weeks to settle. Once you are used to the people, the food and the routine, things will start to become easier. Care home staff will be aware of how you are feeling so they should try their best to help you adjust.
